Anime is a Japanese art style, popular for its common use in eastern Asian animation. The style usually consists of cartoonish proportions such as a if head and an expressive face for strong emotions. A popular amount of art teachers present such a bias towards a type of art but it’s still and unfair issue towards any young aspiring artist as a many people, including myself, believe that an art teacher’s job is to teach their students the basics such as perspective, color theory, and anatomy and different techniques with a growing appreciation for other art and artists as well.

I personally have never experienced this type of attack from a teacher but it would appear in the art community that there are many artists who have experienced such hatred towards their art and style choice. There have also been people who have also been discouraged from pursuing art by their teacher, and sometimes it’s not even for the fact that they drew anime. LemiaCresent, an art channel on YouTube has said that her brother in highschool has stopped drawing after his teacher has said that he shouldn’t be attending art school due to his use of references and style of anime. Another art channel on Youtube, Lavendertowne, has said that her professors at her college art school have a distaste for anime as well, with many of her classmates gaining lectures on why anime is so unprofessional and such.

Not all art teachers have this type of verdict and others would say that anime art can be just as expressive as any other art style. Mrs. Sweet, the teacher in charge of journalism and the supervisor of the art club has expressed that it will just take time for teachers to respect anime in its entirety, similar to the impressionist movement in France. Mrs Hoskins, the 6th grade art teacher here on campus, although believes that other art teachers might have a lack of understanding towards the anime art style.

This topic is important since teachers will have a big impact on your life, whether you like it or not. They can influence how you work, get you to like or hate a subject, and or inspire you to pursue a certain career. They shouldn’t make you feel like your passion is invalid and make you start doing it less or all together. And at the end of the day, their rude opinions of you or someone else are just opinions. We are all individuals with unique experiences, opinions, and hobbies and that shouldn’t make us feel like less of a person of skill and talent.
